Brazil's Carnival holiday road toll highest in eight years
RIO DE JANEIRO, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The number of deaths on Brazil's federal highways during the Carnival long holiday was the highest registered in the country since 2003, the Federal Highway Police said Thursday.
From Friday to Wednesday, 213 people died in motor vehicle accidents on Brazil's federal highways, a 48 percent rise from 143 for the same period in 2010.
The number of motor vehicle accidents has also increased, reaching 4,165, from 3,233 last year. A total of 2,441 people were injured in those accidents, up 27.4 percent from 2010.
The Federal Highway Police attributed the increase in the number of accidents to three factors: the rain which fell over most of Brazil during the entire holiday, the rise in the number of vehicles circulating on the highways, and the increasing imprudence of Brazilian drivers.The drivers' alcohol consumption does not appear to have any effects in the rise in accidents, as the number of breathalyzer tests performed in the period did not show any significant change compared with 2010.
Brazil has tough regulations regarding driving under the influence of alcohol, and any driver found with more than 0.6 grams of alcohol in their bloodstream is immediately arrested.
